FIBA Esports: Building a sustainable future

FIBA recognized the rise of digital basketball and launched eFIBA during the Covid‑19 pandemic to engage fans and expand the sport into esports. Between 2020 and 2021, FIBA tested the concept through three virtual FIBA Esports Open tournaments before scaling to eFIBA Seasons 1–3, introducing in‑person World Finals and attracting growing participation from national federations, players, fans, and sponsors. After a key partner withdrew in 2024, eFIBA faced resource constraints, prompting a strategic reassessment. By 2025, the organization needed to evaluate the value created for stakeholders, explore viable B2B/B2C business models, and define a three‑year roadmap to enhance value creation and capture.
